According to a February 2020 report of FAO, 85% of global banana production is for domestic consumption and bananas are estimated to constitute up to 25% of daily caloric intake in rural areas of producing countries. In 2019 plantain ranked tenth in the global list of staple foods. Bananas are a healthy source of fiber, potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and various antioxidants and phytonutrients and they have frequently been featured on stamps issued for World Food Day such as issues of Rwanda in 1982 (fig. 14) and Saudi Arabia in 1992 (fig. 15). Whether grown on small farms or huge plantations bananas are an important source of income and nutrition around the world.
