Portugal (Madeira)
The first report of the presence of banana cultivation on Madeira was made by a British traveller, Thomas Nichols, when he visited the islands in 1552. The size of banana plantations is, for the most part, limited by the small size of most farms with their terraced with stone walls. Nonetheless, banana farms totaling 700 hectares, represent a considerable part of all of the cultivated land in Madeira.
