Sweden

Sweden does not produce bananas and, according to Judi Lembke in Culture Trip, as of 2017 Sweden was winning in an on-going rivalry with Denmark for the title of the largest per-capita consumer of bananas in the world. According to Snopes.com Rosalía Guerrero Cantarell wrote in the journal History of Retailing and Consumption that the first bananas arrived in Sweden in 1906. Four companies gained control of the limited market that existed until World War II shut off supplies. The arrival of a shipment of 20 000 tonnes of bananas in 1944 launched the upward trend that has brought banana consumption to its current high levels.
