Windmill Point

Windmill Point Lighthouse

The windmill at the site of the 1838 battle was converted to a lighthouse in 1872 to facilitate navigation on the St. Lawrence River.

Location of Windmill Point

Located in the southwestern edge of the Township of Edwardsburgh-Cardinal, the Battle of the Windmill National Historic Site commemorates the defeat of an invading force of Americans and defeated rebels from the rebellion of 1837 who had fled to the United States. An anonymous history of the village of Cardinal published by the Prescott Journal in 1898 mentions the presence of an early pioneer of Cardinal, Major Duncan Clark in the battle. The author himself mentions setting out from the village on foot to join the battle, being forced to detour because the bridge at Johnstown had been destroyed by the rebels, and finally arriving after the battle had been won. He notes that after the battle Tunis Castleman's house was used as a barracks for tihe militia guarding the point against invasion and dragoons patrolled between Prescott and Cardinal.
