The Baby Taj Mahal

The Baby Taj Mahal

Situated on the east bank of the Yamuna River, the tomb of Mirzā Ghiyās Beg, I'timād-ud-Daulah ("the pillar of the state"), was built between 1622 and 1628. It was commissioned by Nūr Jahān, the wife of Jahangir, for her father, a Persian Amir in exile. Known as the "Baby Taj," the complex was one of the first to make extensive use of marble on exterior and interior surfaces. Wall paintings and inlay represent a change from the extensive use of stone carvings characteristic of earlier structures. The use of realistic floral designs reflects Persian influences.
