Step Well in Lohargal

Stepwell in Lohargal

Stepwells such as this one in Lohargal (southeast of Nawalgarh) are used to collect monsoon rains to ensure a supply of water through the dry season. The steps descending several stories into the ground would provide access as the water levels declined through the dry season. Our guide told us that they were also used to conceal jewelry and other valuables from raiding armies.
