City Palace

Located along the banks of Lake Pichola, Udaipur's City Palace is actually a complex consisting of eleven mahals or palaces. The Toran Pol is the gateway that connecting the Manek Chowk with the Moti Chowk. It was probably constructed during the reign of Rana Karan Singhjii (1620-1628). The gold disks within blue circles represent the sun god, Surya, from whom the Maharanas of Mewar trace their origins. Just beneath the pointed peak of the arch is an image of Ganesha, the Elephant, God of New Beginnings, Success and Wisdom and the Remover of Obstacles. Royal bridegrooms mounted on their elephants would touch the structure suspended in front of the arch with their swords before entering their bride's house on their wedding night.
