Takayama
Historical Preservation

This statue pays tribute to Yamaoka Tesshu (1836 – 1888), the founder of the Itto Shoden Muto-ryu school of swordsmanship, a famous samurai of the Bakumatsu period, and influencial statesman in the Meiji Restoration. Although he was born in Edo, he moved to Takayama as a youth.
