Tokyo
Meiji Shrine

The period of 1868-1912 was one of modernization under the Emperor Meiji who moved his court to Edo and changed its name to Tokyo. Although his remains are in Kyoto, he is deified in this Shinto Shrine, built in 1920. The original structures were destroyed during World War II and were reconstructed in 1958.
