Portuguese Africa
War Tax Stamp of 1919
This is one of three values in a set of war tax stamps issued in 1919.
Portugal issued three sets of stamps for general use in its African colonies. The first was the Vasco da Gama issue of 1898 inscribed "Africa." The second set was the series of fiscal stamps including the one pictured above overprinted "TAXA DE GUERRA." The 4 centavo value in this set was probably a revenue stamp. The final set of stamps for use throughout Portuguese Africa was a set of nine postage due stamps issued in 1945.
