EUROPA Issue of 1983

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, EUROPA 1983
EUROPA issue of June 30, 1983 depicting a map of the island by the Ottoman-Turkish
admiral and cartographer Piri Reis and an image of Cyprus as seen from Skylab.

After ethnic clashes between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots in 1963, handstamped stamps overprinted "KIBRIS TURK POSTALAI" and other localissues were introduced in Turkish areas. The following year regular services were restored with Turkish Cypriots running postal services in the Turkish areas. A special issue commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Turkish Republic was released for use in the Turkish areas on October 29, 1973.

After the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in July 1974 an autonomous Turkish area was established on the north-eastern end of the island. The postal administration was not recognized by the U.P.U. and in Scott's Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue the stamps are listed separately after the listings for Turkey.
