Intercontinental Hotel - Financial District
Fierce looking mythological beasts defend the Intercontinental Hotel in Beijing from evil spirits so travellers are able to sleep peacefully at the end of a long journey. Our long day of travel began in Ottawa, Ontario at 7:45 a.m. on Monday, September 10 with a five and half hour flight to Vancouver. We took off from Vancouver at 12:10 p.m. for an eleven hour flight to Beijing. It was a bit disconcerting to have to board a train at Beijing's modern airport to get from passport control to baggage claim but we got our luggage and were pleased to be greeted at the airport by our guide Jessica Chen.
Our flight had taken us across the International Date Line so it was late afternoon on September 11 when we loaded our luggage into the van going to our hotel just inside the first ring road in the modern Financial District west of downtown Beijing. The traffic on the modern highway did seem any worse than that on a highway in a Canadian city. Although we had a very good trip, fatigue limited our explorations in the evening to a bakery and the convenience stores in the neighborhood across the ring road from the hotel.
