Three Gorges Museum
One exhibit in the Three Gorges Museum pays tribute to the courage and sacrifices made by the city's residents during the war against Japan. In one exhibit the visitor walks through an underground bomb shelter and encounters a locked gate from which a crowd is scrambling to escape. The museum offers the following explanation, "In the evening of June 5, 1941, the Japanese planes bombed Chongqing over four hours. The citizens crowded into Shibati Big Tunnel at Jiaochangkou, situated at the center of the city. The maximum of this tunnel's holding is about 6000 people, but in this day near 100,000 people swarmed into the tunnel. The over-crowdedness of the people barred the flow of air to the extent that many oxide-lacking people died of suffocation in desperation."
