Earthquakes,tidal waves and firestorms ...

On November 1, 1755 one of the most powerful earthquakes in recorded history shook Lisbon. The Portuguese capital, Europe's fifth largest city with about 200 000 inhabitants, was further devastated by ensuing tidal waves and firestorms. The 250th anniversary of this event is commemorated on two stamps and a souvenir sheet issued by Portugal on November 25, 2005.
