On the 110th Anniversary of Ho Chi Minh's birth, celebrated on May 19, 2000, the streets of Hanoi were decorated with banners commemorating the man who led the struggle for liberation and reunification of Vietnam.Ho Chi Minh's house, located on
the grounds of the French Governor General's residence reflects the modest life style of the national hero who never forgot his connection with the peasantry of Vietnam.

Ho Chi Minh's symbolic importance is reflected in the mausoleum which was built, contrary to his personal wishes, to house his embalmed corpse. Thousands of people line up daily to file past his body to pay their respects to this great patriot.
 The "Chua Cot" or "One Pillar Pogoda" was originally built in 1049 by King Ly Thai To in gratitude for the birth of a male child to the peasant girl whom he had been inspired to marry by a dream. It was reconstructed after it had been blown up by French soldiers in 1954.
