Caibarien, Cuba

Caibarien, a small coastal city, is located just to the west of the head of the causeway.

Travellers arriving from Santa Clara are greeted by a giant crab's
claws which reflect the importance of fishing to the local economy.

A billboard on the approach to the causeway quotes Fidel Castro as declaring that Cuba
is as proud of the workers who built the causeway as it is of the mambises (the guerilla
fighters of the Ten Year War (1868-1878) and the Independence War of 1895 against Spain).

The 48 kilometre causeway begins with a toll gate located near the city.
