Perched on the hillside overlooking the older colonial parts of Quito, the new Basilica offers magnificent views of the city. Looking back from the clock tower one gets a view of an open air viewing platform that is accessed via an interior catwalk over the roof of the cathedral and an open ladder from the roof level to the platform. The viewing platform offers a spectacular view of "The Virgin of Quito" perched on El Panecillo (the "little loaf of bread" hill) through the cathedral's twin clock towers.
