Polish Legion Cinderellas

Perforated Issue of 1916.
Jozef Pilsudski raised the Polish Legion to fight against Russia in the hope
of eventually regaining Poland's independence. According to Chapier, these
stamps inscribed "LEGIONISTOM POLSKIM" had no postal validity. They were
charity stamps intended to promote enlistment in the Polish Legion of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire in Galacia. The four values pictured exist perforated
and imperforate. A similar stamp, in a smaller format, was issued in 1917.
