Surrounded by Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Albania, Macedonia was part of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia until it declared independence on November 21, 1991. It issued its first stamp on September 8, 1992. It was admitted to the Council of Europe in 1995 and it issued its first EUROPA stamps on November 22, 1996. These stamps depicted Vera Ciriviri-Trena, a freedom fighter who was killed during World War II, and Mother Teresa.

On November 14, 2005 Macedonia issued four stamps and a souvenir sheet in anticipation of the fiftieth anniversary of EUROPA stamps in 2006. The stamps depict Macedonia's EUROPA issues of 2002 (circus acrobatic apparatus) on the 60 denar, 1999 (National Parks) on the 170 denar, 1997 (Stories and Legends) on the 250 denar and 1996 (Mother Teresa) on the 350 denar.
