Blueband Margarine Advertising Slogan Cancellation
The only commercial advertising slogan cancellation used in the Netherlands was for
Blueband Margarine and it was only in use from August 31 until September 30, 1924.
This post card depicting a scene of the old canal in Utrecht was mailed on September 16, 1924 from Utrecht Station and delivered in the first delivery of the day "A" by letter carrier "119" in Haarlem (presumably on September 17). The postcard is franked with a two cent stamp commemorating the 25th anniversary of Wilhelmina and the Queen of the Netherlands. Of particular interest is the slogan cancellation reading, "KOOPT HEDEN BLUE BAND VERSCH GEKARND" ("BUY TODAY FRESHLY CHURNED BLUE BAND [MARGARINE]"). This is the only example of an advertising cancellation used in the Netherlands because the contract had to be suspended after only one month of a six month term because of legal action taken against the post office by competitors who objected to having the advertisements appear on their correspondence.
