The twelve stamps in Gilbert and Ellice Islands King George VI pictorial definitive set were issued on January 14, 1939. The designs feature a great frigate bird on the 1/2d, a pandanus tree on the 1d, a canoe crossing the reef on the 1 1/2d, a canoe and boat house on the 2d, an islander's house on a 2 1/2d, a seascape on the 3d, an Ellice Islands canoe on the 5d, coconut trees on the 6d, the phosphate loading jetty on Ocean Island on the 1/-, the cutter Nimanoa on the 2/-, a Gilbert Islands canoe on the 2/-6d and the coat of arms of the colony on the 5/-.
