In the weeks leading up to our departure on November 7, 2019, Japan was struck by Typhoon Hagibis which caused widespread flooding and landslides. There was widespread flooding and landslides and the World Rugby Championships were disrupted. Despite the damage to transportation infrastructure, by the time of our arrival, most trains and buses were back on schedule and the punctuality and reliability of the trains and buses on which we travelled was impressive. The omnipresent
konbini (convenience stores) like 7-Eleven, Lawson and Family Mart ensured that we never went hungry and were able to eat well within our budget. Although the language barrier was significant, the bilingual signage on trains and buses was impressive and there we encountered many patient, helpful and welcoming people during our three-week visit to the island of Honshu.
